A Tale of Three Cities

Greetings from the far side of the world!

A tropical thunderstorm raging outside has finally compelled me to sit down with my long-neglected computer and begin the mammoth task of sorting through the thousands of pictures we've taken over the past three weeks. Of course I'll tell you all about it as soon as we're home, but in the meantime, I've put up a little taster of the three places we've visited and some of the incredible things we've eaten there. Can you guess where we've been? I'll give you a hint: they're all in Asia, all within a two-hour flight of each other, and they're three of the continent's - if not the world's - greatest food cities. Any ideas?

Ooh I am excited to see your pictures!

Am gonna guess: Ho Chi Minh, Phom Penh and errm *scratches head* somewhere in Malaysia? Is KL within two hours? Maybe Penang?!

Hope the rain keeps falling so you can do some more blogging ;)

Great pictures, as always!

Here's my guess: Penang, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh. :-)

Definitely Singapore! I see the poster from Ya Kun Toast, chendol, char kway teow, nasi lemak, kaya toast with soft boiled eggs, Sri Mariamman Temple and a 'No durians' sign. I've lived here all my life and still haven't run out of things to eat. Glad you enjoyed it! :)

I see the Hindu temple but that isn't in South India. So I am going to guess Singapore.. So I say Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok

July 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAsha@FSK

I am only sure about Singapore, because of the Hindu temple and the "no durian" sign!!! So the other 2 must be Hong Kong and Bangkok... Char Kway Teow: I am all envy!

Singapore is so enchanting. Is one Vietnam?

Singapore ("No durians", kaya toast, Sri Mariamman)
KL (Twin Towers, nasi lemak)
Hanoi (French quarter)?

Singapore,Vietnam & Hong Kong...........????

July 19, 2010 | Unregistered CommenternikkiX5

When I read the title of your post, I had a sneaky feeling that the three cities you visited were in Asia... The moment I saw the red "Berhenti" sign, I knew you had been to Malaysia- where I live! Wahoo!

Now to put in my guess-
1. Somewhere in Malaysia- either Penang or Kuala Lumpur.. most likely Penang since you have pictures of Char Kuey Teow, Asam Laksa and Cendol;
2. Somewhere in Vietnam - either Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi;
3. Singapore

And yes, I do agree with you that we have pretty much the best food around :) Did you try durian? :D

July 19, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

I love the "screw the french press..." sign. As a french press coffee drinker, it makes me want to check out the sock method to see if it is better!

July 19, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCorey

Hmm... I'm going to saw Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Hanoi.

The French Press sign was awesome. I would love to have that blown up in my kitchen! Would be a great market for some of your awesome sign photos :)

And did you try the durian? I

@Corey - I have heard that it is brewed through a bag in southeast asia, while it's not a sock, you might be able to find a recipe that way.

Is that chendol from Malaysia?? It is incredibly enticing :) You're so lucky to have gotten to visit Southeast Asia...

...but I'm luckier because I live here! mwahahaha

Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam

July 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLena

Singapore, yes: that amazing temple! And although I'm not sure, I think Penang/Georgetown, as I found it slightly more exciting foodwise than KL. The third? Vietnam, yes, but until I visit - six weeks in January/February! - I can't be certain which city..
I cannot wait to read about your experiences though!

Wow, brings back so many memories! Now all my taste buds are screaming for salted fish, Nyonya style! Uhm, let's see... (a) Penang, Malaysia; (b) Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; (c) Singapore.
